A Prayer for Our Church, Our Nation and Our World

I was unable to attend our service this Sunday, but this was my prayer, more than ably read by Andrew.  Thanks to him for stepping in for me at short notice.

—————————–

Oh Lord and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ,

You O God are majestic in all the earth,

With a word you created the Heavens and the Earth,

With a word you filled the skies, the seas, the land.

And it pleased you to make us, your Creatures, in Your Image, our Father,

You O God are majestic in all the earth,

And we are fearfully and wonderfully made by You.

We lift before you all who are sick and suffering within our church family at this time, particularly our dear brother and sister, Paul and Rachel,

We are mindful that:

With a word Christ calmed the storm

With a word Christ healed the sick

With a word Christ raised the dead

With a word Christ gives life, and with a word Christ can call us home

Bring healing to Paul we pray, through the treatment he is undergoing or through a miraculous work of your Spirit,

Give both Paul and Rachel and all who suffer strength to endure hardship and joy in Christ, even in the very darkest of times, we pray,

And enable us all, by the power of your Spirit, and the encouragement of our fellowship together in Christ, to live well and die well for the glory of your Son.

And so together we pray…

Our heavenly Father,

in grace and mercy,

act for the glory of your Son,

Jesus Christ.

Our Father,

Have mercy on our nation.

Forgive our arrogance as we seek to determine right from wrong without acknowledging You or Your Word,

Forgive our foolishness as our nation’s leaders declare what is best for our society without bowing the knee before the Lord and King, Jesus Christ,

Forgive our wickedness as we as a nation seek to deny what is good and affirm what is evil in your sight, particularly as regards the institution of marriage which you created for our good.

Have mercy on us.

And, we pray, come Holy Spirit and sweep through our nation,

Bring our politicians, our leaders, to their knees before you in repentance and faith,

Bring we citizens of this nation to new life in Christ that we might know and love and serve you,

Let us learn afresh to honour you in private and public life

Let us learn from You as you direct our steps and lead us in paths of righteousness,

And at this time in particular, Let us learn from Your Word that marriage truly is and what it is not,

For the good of your people,

For the good of this nation,

For the glory of your Son.

And so together we pray…

Our heavenly Father,

in grace and mercy,

act for the glory of your Son,

Jesus Christ.

You, our God, are God of all the earth,

You are the Maker and Sustainer of all men, women and children whether they know you or not.

Our Lord Jesus Christ told us there would be wars until the day he returned,

And our hearts are saddened by the suffering we see around the world.

We pray for the Syrian nation and ask that you would act to bring peace,

And we pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ and ask that, by your strengthening hand, you would grant them grace to forgive and to act with mercy to all around them.

May they be a witness to you, o God of all compassion, as they act with compassion in their nation.

And so together we pray…

Our heavenly Father,

in grace and mercy,

act for the glory of your Son,

Jesus Christ.

And finally, we bring before you in the quietness of our hearts, those people and events and nations you have made dear to us…

And so together we pray…

Our heavenly Father,

in grace and mercy,

act for the glory of your Son,

Jesus Christ.
