On Tuesday night, seventeen Rock men met at Mike & Dawn Partridge’s home, enticed by the promised talk from Mike on basketball and the prospect of sharing a few curry dishes.
Apart from getting to know one another better (which was good), we prayed for Paul Matthews (who’d had his second chemo-therapy treatment that very day). We also talked about the possibilities for serving the church and our community better.
Al MacDonald (Cathy-Joan’s Dad) brought us greetings from the men’s group, Iron to Iron, at his church (Mount Zion United Methodist, Lothian, MD, USA) and shared some of the things that they do. Some of the things, like servicing of people’s cars, seemed a little ambitious for us to start with!
A number of ideas were mentioned in conversations and a front-runner seems to be doing something to serve Morley School where Rock Baptist meets: Tim Fox is going to investigate that for us and let us know. We’re still open to ideas for serving our community.
Apart from it being an excuse for Mike to show us some of his favourite YouTube clips of basketball moments, his talk convinced us that both netball and basketball were dangerous sports! Some in the group apparently found it hard to believe that Mike had once played professional basketball and been in the England under-21s squad. Once that was established, it seemed easier to believe that the only video of Mike’s basketball career was of being sent off…..
The dates for the next “Men’s Breakfast” and the next “Men’s Breakfast: Curry Night” are not yet fixed, but we’ll let you know as soon as they are. In the meantime, if you want to know more or suggest some ideas then let Alan White or Mike Partridge know.
